Goodsol Newsletter #387 Great Wheel Solitaire
It has been four weeks since my open heart surgery and I am slowly recovering. I'm getting better but I will be in recovery for months.
So how is this going to affect new versions of our games? There is good news and bad news. The bad news is that the next Windows Pretty Good Solitaire version will be indefinitely delayed. It will be awhile before I am well enough to work on it again. I had planned a release for about now, but I was only about halfway done with it when the health issue struck. The good news is that the Mac/iPad/iPhone games will not be much affected. They are done by another programmer. The next Mac update to Pretty Good Solitaire is in development.
In this newsletter I have a featured game of an old classic game, Great Wheel.
Pretty Good Solitaire for Windows is currently at version 20.1 with 1040 games and Daily Quests - now in our 26th year! This version has 10 new games including Challenge Klondike, Corona Rush and Indian Thirteen.

Featured Game - Great Wheel
Great Wheel is an unusual and interesting solitaire game. It is a two deck game with all the Kings removed.
The tableau consists of eight piles with four cards dealt face up to each. The remainder of the cards form a stock, which is dealt one card at a time to a waste pile. There are no redeals. Whenever a space is created in the tableau, it is filled by four cards dealt out face up from the waste.
There is no building in the tableau until the stock is empty. Once the stock is empty, the tableau piles are built down in suit, only one card moved at a time.
You begin by getting as many Twos and Threes out as possible to begin building on the foundations. Try to get the low cards played to the foundations quickly. Clearing out a tableau column is helpful since that brings four more cards into play and reduces the number of cards buried in the waste. Keeping the waste from getting too many cards is key to victory.
Once you have gone through the stock, then you can begin moving cards in the tableau to free buried cards. If you can create an empty space in the tableau after the waste is empty, you can then move any card to the empty space. If you can get to that point, you will probably win the game.
Similar games are Greater Wheel and Carousel.
Great Wheel is one of the 1040 games in Pretty Good Solitaire (for Windows), one of the 750 games in Pretty Good Solitaire Mac Edition and Pretty Good Solitaire for iPad, and one of the 720 games in Pretty Good Solitaire Mini for iPhone.
